Janice Mirikitani "Yea, She Knows" Poetry Contest

The Asian American Studies Program is sponsoring a poetry contest to commemorate the 1968-1969 Third World Liberation Front strikes that helped establish ethnic studies programs at San Francisco State University and University of California, Berkeley.

Janice Mirikitani’s poem “Yea, She Knows” (1989, Amerasia Journal) captured the radical spirit of these strikes as well as the impact of the teaching that they set in motion. The poem moves back and forth between Mirikitani’s experiences as a student at S.F. State and those of her daughter twenty years later, and uses multiple voices, styles, and perspectives to talk about struggles for knowledge and power both inside and outside the classroom.

All entries should be inspired by Janice Mirikitani’s “Yea, She Knows.”

UM students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local community members are welcome to enter. Gift cards and other great prizes will be awarded to the top entries in each category and published in the Asian American Studies journal.

"Yea, She Knows" is available at https://z.umn.edu/39n8 in its entirety.
